Ginger Beef Bone Broth

This ginger beef bone broth is incredibly easy to make, with only 3 ingredients (including water) and is full of flavor and nutrients. I love to add a little honey and sip on it but it would also serve as a great base to soups and sauces.

Bone broth is made by simmering bones until the bone marrow and connective tissues are broken down and infused into the broth. It sounds weird, but drinking bone broth can have many health benefits! Bones contain a number of vitamins and minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B, etc) that are released when simmered. The bone marrow also contains several vitamins & minerals in addition to omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The connective tissues contain collagen that provide amino acids may be beneficial for skin, hair, and joint health. All of these things make for a nutritious anti-inflammatory concoction.

Besides being more cost-effective than purchasing store-bought bone broth, one of the great benefits of making it yourself is that you can customize the flavor. I often keep a bag in my freezer where I store veggie scraps (garlic, onion and onion skins, celery tops, left over herbs, carrot tops, etc.) until I’m ready to make broth. I also keep bone scraps from rotisserie chicken or bone-in steak or pork chops. Once I fill up my bag, I throw the contents into a pot and a few hours later I have bone broth for months!

This time, however, I decided to take the bone broth in a different direction and came up with the idea to make ginger bone broth! I LOVE ginger. I cook with it frequently and love the kick of spice it adds. Moreover, ginger is thought to provide many health benefits including reducing nausea and inflammation, increasing gastric emptying (hello, digestion!), and mild pain relief.

I usually store the bone broth in glass jars so that I can freeze them and extend the shelf life. This ginger bone broth would be a great base for soups, but I also enjoy just drinking it hot with 1/2 tablespoon of honey. Something about it is so soothing!

You can really use any type of bones, but for this recipe I bought some beef bones from a local farmer. You can use a variety of different bones (shanks, tail or neck bones, etc) but make sure they still have some meat and connective tissue still attached because this is what provides the collagen.

Ginger Beef Bone Broth

Cook Time 6 hrs

  • 8 qt pot


  • 3-4 lbs beef bones
  • 1 cup sliced ginger (more or less to taste, I like a strong ginger flavor so the more the better in my opinion!) (I do not bother peeling the garlic first)
  • 6 qts water (plus or minus to fill pot)


  • Place ginger and bones in an 8 qt pot. Fill with water and place on high heat.
  • Bring the broth to a boil then reduce to a simmer and cover.
  • Simmer for 2-6 hours (the longer the better).
  • Remove from heat. Skim off any foam that collects at the top with a spoon then drain the broth.
  • Pour into glass jars to store in the freezer or refrigerator.


Tip: To drain the broth, I place a colander in a large bowl. Carefully pour the bone broth into the colander. The colander will collect the bones and ginger, allowing the broth to drain out. Easy peasy!
